The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 1 is the first-generation ThinkPad foldable PC with a 13.3-inch folding OLED display; this configuration has an Intel Core i5-L16G7 processor, 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage and comes with the Fold Mini Keyboard and a pen. It is more of a special companion device for reading, note-taking and light work than a replacement for a main laptop.

Intel Core i5-L16G7 Processor

This Intel processor with Hybrid Technology (Lakefield architecture) has 5 cores and 5 threads, reaches up to 3.0GHz, and has 4MB of cache. It is designed for very low power use and suits light office work, note-taking, reading and online meetings; however, it lacks the power for programming, heavy multitasking or professional software. Laptop Mag also rated its performance as middling.

Integrated Intel UHD Graphics

Graphics are integrated into the processor with no dedicated memory; they are enough for video and everyday tasks but not suited to gaming or graphics work.

8GB RAM and 512GB SSD

The 8GB of LPDDR4X-4266 RAM is package-on-package (PoP) memory and cannot be upgraded. The 512GB storage is an M.2 2242 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD.

13.3-inch Folding OLED Display

The main feature of this device is its 13.3-inch folding OLED display with QXGA (2048×1536) resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio, which supports touch and pen input. Official brightness is 300 nits, contrast 5000:1 and color coverage 95% DCI-P3. The device works in four modes: laptop, tablet, book and all-in-one; in laptop mode, the screen folds in the middle and the keyboard sits on its lower half.

Design, Battery, Keyboard and Pen

The chassis is magnesium alloy with a genuine leather cover in black, weight starts at 0.999kg, and thickness is 11.3mm unfolded and 27.8mm folded. Ports are two USB-C 10Gbps with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.2. The wireless Fold Mini Keyboard (Bluetooth, not backlit) is included; it attaches magnetically to the screen and charges when closed inside the folded device, and a Lenovo pen is also included. A 5MP webcam with an IR camera for Windows Hello, four microphones, two speakers with Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.1 and a 50Wh battery are also included. In Laptop Mag's battery test, it lasted about 6 hours. There is no fingerprint reader or card reader, and it ships without an operating system.

Who Is This Laptop For?

Executives and users who want a very light device with a large screen for reading documents, pen note-taking and meetings.

Technology enthusiasts who want a ThinkPad foldable PC.

Users who already have a main laptop and need a second companion device.

In this configuration, the ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 1 offers a folding OLED display, a weight under one kilogram, a magnesium and leather chassis, a keyboard and a pen together; however, this first generation was introduced in 2020, its processor is weak for heavy tasks, the 8GB of RAM cannot be upgraded and the price is high relative to its hardware performance.

Intel Core i5-L16G7

Intel UHD
